Key to the EU

A 6-week teaching and learning programme designed for teachers of pupils aged 5–12 across Europe.
Access free ready-to-use lessons, activities and videos to teach about active citizenship in the European Union.

Why this Programme?

Teaching about active European citizenship doesn’t have to be abstract.
Key to the EU gives teachers and pupils the tools to think critically, debate, collaborate, and see the European Union as a shared space.

It’s not about promoting the EU. It’s about understanding and questioning it to empower students to get their voice heard.

Teaching about active European citizenship involves civic engagement of all people living in the EU, even if they don’t have an EU passport.

How Does It Work?

Each section of the website connects to the others — helping you move from lessons, to classroom activities, to hands-on European projects.

The steps below are just a guide. You can explore them in any order, mix lessons and activities freely, or jump straight to the projects — everything is open and interconnected.

Step 1 – Choose your Class Level

Juniors & Seniors (ages 5–6)

Pupils discover “my country in the EU” through simple, playful lessons about the EU flag, teamwork, and belonging to a club.

1st–2nd Class (ages 7–8)

Pupils begin to understand the idea of clubs and unions, exploring European countries, currency, and travel within the EU.

3rd–4th Class (ages 9–10)

Pupils learn about the EU symbols. They engage with topics such as elections, Brexit, and citizenship.

5th–6th Class (ages 11–12)

Pupils further use their critical thinking skills to discuss EU values, the Single Market and European institutions and policies.

Step 2 – Find Activities

Complement your lessons with fun, age-appropriate activities and games: short exercises, printable quizzes, or 2 hour simulations that bring the EU to life.
You can explore them within the lessons or directly via the Activities section.

Step 3 – Play and Learn in the KidZone!

Between lessons, let your pupils explore the EU in a playful way!
Discover six short online games featuring Seamy Shamrock, the mascot who helps children learn about EU countries, flags and values.

Step 4 – Go Further

Take your classroom beyond lessons and join one of our European projects:

  • Europe Week – connect with other schools across Europe
  • Our Europe, Our Impact – develop local-to-European projects with your pupils

I have to say I was apprehensive as to whether the content would be accessible for my class but it has been an extremely rewarding programme to have engaged in. The use of PowerPoints, games, and hands-on activities made the content so interesting for my girls, and their retention of what they have learnt has been super thanks to all of your resources. Thank you for making this available to us.

The tasks were very enjoyable. The children particularly enjoyed making EU smoothies to show how interwoven the countries of the EU are! […]
Many parents were very impressed with the children’s ability to discuss the EU as a club, the importance of teamwork, the meaning behind the stars on the EU flag, and details such as the least and greatest populated EU countries.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your work on this project. This year was my first time doing it and my class really enjoyed it and I was extremely impressed at the resources. We also loved the zoom quiz on May 10th. The children are looking forward to receiving the plaque in the post and I’m excited to register and use your amazing programme again next year with my class.
